State legislature extends renewable energy tax benefits

The 2nd Special Session of the 2013 Washington Legislature passed ESSB 5882, which affects several tax provisions relating to renewable energy in Washington.?


ESSB 5882 extends several tax incentives, among other things.

  • Extends the special B&O tax rate of .275% for manufacturers, processors for hire, and wholesalers of solar energy systems, until June 30, 2017, with clarifications.
  • Extends the existing sales and use tax exemption for hog fuel until June 30, 2024, with additional compliance and reporting requirements.
  • Extends the sales and use tax exemption for machinery and equipment used in facilities that generate electricity from solar energy to June 30, 2018.
  • Extends the sales and use tax exemption for machinery and equipment used in facilities that generate electricity from other renewable energy to January 1, 2020.
