Iran's president-elect Hassan Rouhani has called Israel a "wound" that must be ?removed.?

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Speaking up for a contentious former aide, President Barack Obama pushed back Wednesday against liberal Democrats who are urging the president not to pick Lawrence Summers to run the Federal Reserve.
In a closed-door session with House Democrats, Obama offered what participants in the meeting described as a keen defense of Summers after being pressed by Rep. Ed Perlmutter of Colorado about his controversial consideration of Summers to replace the Fed's outgoing chairman, Ben Bernanke. The defense continued at the White House, where press secretary Jay Carney said Summers had "stood shoulder to shoulder" with Obama during an economic crisis.
"He made decisions and put forth the policies that helped reverse the tragic economic decline that this country faced in the beginning of 2009," Carney said, adding that Obama's kind words about his former aide shouldn't be misconstrued as an omen about whether Obama would pick him for the top Fed post.
The head of the National Economic Council during Obama's first term, Summers served as treasury secretary from 1999 to 2001 under President Bill Clinton, and his performance in that role drew criticism from liberals who remain unhappy with Summers' push to deregulate financial markets.
"It would be a tragic mistake to nominate anyone as chair of the Fed who continued those failed policies," said Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., one of the most liberal members of the Senate. Sen. Dick Durbin of Illinois, a member of the Senate Democratic leadership, has said he would have numerous questions for Summers before being able to support him.
Obama's pending decision has attracted widespread attention and sparked substantial controversy, in part because of the major role the Fed chairman will play in managing an economy still struggling to recover from the recession.
Summers' critics have alleged he's too cozy with big Wall Street banks. Women's groups have also bristled over comments Summers once made questioning their abilities in math and science during his tenure as president of Harvard University. A few dozen female Democrats in the House have signed a letter urging Obama to instead pick current Fed vice chair Janet Yellen.
Seeking to lower expectations about an imminent announcement, the White House said Obama will not name a new Fed chair until the fall. Obama has said he's looking for a chairman who will take ordinary people's needs into account when setting monetary policy.
As he defended Summers to House Democrats on Wednesday, Obama also mentioned two other names as possible Fed candidates: Yellen and Donald Kohn, the Fed's former vice chair. And in a parallel meeting with Senate Democrats, the president said he had already interviewed some candidates for the job, though he did not specify those candidates by name.
"Some of my senators have been involved publicly in directing the president's attention to someone else," said Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev. He called Summers a long-time friend and a competent person but said the Democratic caucus will support whomever Obama picks. "He has a long list of people he's talking to," Reid said.

Olloclip's Three-In-One Lens System for the iPhone was a game-changer - an adapter that clipped on to the corner of the iPhone or iPod touch to provide you with separate wide-angle, macro and fish-eye lenses. There was one thing missing, though - a telephoto lens. Olloclip recently announced its Telephoto Lens for iPhone and iPod touch. It's currently available for pre-order, but I've been using it for the last few days and I think it's fantastic.
Clip-on iPhone lenses and cases that include some sort of lens magnifier have been around for a while, but most of them are junky. Olloclip separated itself from the rest by offering precision ground glass multi-element optics. The lens barrels are made from anodized aluminum - quite similar to lenses you might buy for a DSLR camera. The new Telephoto Lens shares the same build quality as the Three-In-One Lens System, so you can count on it to dramatically improve the optics of your iOS device. If you already have the Three-In-One Lens System, it's important to know that the Telephoto Lens is an entirely separate attachment - you can use it entirely independently of that kit.
Olloclip ships the lens in a microfiber sack that doubles as a lens cloth, to help polish away the inevitable fingerprints you'll get on it as you slide it into place.
Making a good camera great
The Telephoto Lens effectively magnifies your device's optics by 2X, which means that you can take more detailed shots from a greater distance than you could before, without resorting to using the Camera app's magnification slider, which works digitally, introducing noise and artifacts into your image. That telephoto effect also changes the camera's depth of field, which enables you to more selectively focus on your subjects to help them stand out from the background.
In my testing, I found that, as you might expect with a telephoto lens, I had to be very careful not to shake or jostle the iPhone too much while I was trying to get pics. For shooting video or trying to take images that might require a bit of exposure, a tripod like Joby's popular GorillaPod stand or a tripod mount might come in very handy. That obviously introduces quite a bit of bulk and extra stuff to carry, so your mileage may vary.
One side of the Telephoto Lens clip is open, with a cutout for the iPhone's lens. That way you can keep the mount clipped to your phone (backwards) even if you're not using it, and use the camera the regular way if needed.
Just remember that this is a telephoto lens, not a zoom lens. The magnification is fixed at 2X, so you can't twist the lens barrel to achieve higher magnification, though the iPhone's "pinch to zoom" feature certainly works.
Glare-proofing your shots
The iPhone's camera lens doesn't do much to cut down on glare and reflected light - I've had some spectacular shots ruined because of the sun or because of exposed nearby light bulbs, for example. Olloclip has answered the requests of some reviewers and customers by developing a snap-on Circular Polarizing Lens (CPL) that they include with the Telephoto Lens - it simply slides securely onto the outside of the Telephoto Lens. It's mounted on a ring that enables the CPL to be rotated, so you can filter out just the amount of light you need to get the shot you want.
The CPL also fits on the open end of the Telephoto Lens clip, so you can store it when it's not in use, or use the CPL even with the iPhone's built-in camera lens. The CPL also includes a 25-20mm step down adapter that enables you to clip it onto the lenses included in the Three-In-One Lens System.
The iPhone's built-in flash exists perilously close to the lens. Because of the shape of the mount, the Telephoto Lens blocks the flash (the same limitation exists in the Three-In-One system). That means the lens isn't suitable for use in low-light conditions or in places where you might need flash or fill to get the image you want. (Olloclip produces a special case designed to work with its products that includes a flash mount, but like a tripod mount, that introduces a lot of added bulk and equipment to take with you.) The lens mount also blocks the power button on the top of the iPhone.
Earlier this year, Olloclip introduced its own camera software application available for free download from the App Store. Designed for users of the Three-In-One Lens System, the software enables you to adjust images to compensate for distortion introduced by some of the lenses, but it's a useful utility besides - you can separately adjust auto-exposure and auto-focus points, for example, something you can't do with Apple's built-in Camera app. Olloclip hasn't updated the software yet with any Telephoto Lens-specific features, but it still works, of course.
Olloclip makes the Telephoto Lens in sizes to fit the iPhone 4 and 4S, the iPhone 5 and iPod touch 5th generation.

There's an oft-repeated adage in photography that the best camera is the one that's with you. The 8 megapixel sensor on the iPhone 5 and iPod touch can, in the right hands, result in some spectacular photos. Those device's camera lenses are good enough for many users. But some have needs that the camera and built-in software can't address without diminishing the quality of the photographs.
To that end, the Telephoto Lens and the CPL are fine additions to Olloclip's product offerings. You get the benefit of 2X optical magnification sans any sort of digital artifacts or manipulation that degrades the image. It's also small enough that you can easily slip it into a pocket and produce it when you need to, so it's not adding unnecessary bulk to your iPhone when it isn't needed.

LOS ANGELES (July 31, 2013) Benedick Fraass, PhD, FAAPM, FASTRO, FACR, received the highest honor from the American Association of Physicists in Medicine the William D. Coolidge Award for his distinguished career achievements in medical physics, including his pioneering work in radiation oncology.
The William D. Coolidge Award is the most prestigious award of the association and has been given to important medical physicists such as William Coolidge, the inventor of the modern X-ray tube, and Harold Johns, who led the development and clinical use of the first Cobalt machines for radiotherapy.
"The William D. Coolidge Award credits those whose innovation and creativity have revolutionized the field of medical physics an award only suited for a prestigious leader like Dr. Fraass," said Steven Piantadosi, MD, PhD, director of the Samuel Oschin Comprehensive Cancer Institute and the Phase ONE Foundation Distinguished Chair. "Dr. Fraass has dedicated both his mind and talent to radiation oncology providing more efficient treatment to thousands of patients across the world."
Fraass, vice chair for Research and professor and director of Medical Physics in the Department of Radiation Oncology at Cedars-Sinai's Samuel Oschin Comprehensive Cancer Institute, is a renowned medical physicist specializing in radiation oncology, imaging-based treatment planning, computer-controlled treatment delivery and clinical studies of radiation oncology treatment for cancer.
Fraass was instrumental in the creation of 3D treatment planning in the 1980s and early 1990s and helped pioneer the development of 3D conformal therapy, a technique in which beams of radiation are shaped to match a tumor during treatment, sparing nearby normal tissue.
Additionally, Fraass led the team that implemented the first routine clinical use of 3D treatment planning, a now-commonplace software tool used to design and implement more accurate radiation therapy. Fraass and colleagues also created the first radiation oncology clinical dose escalation trials using conformal therapy in 1987, as well as doing pioneering work in computer-controlled treatment delivery. Fraass continues his efforts to improve patient safety.
"It is an honor to join the elite group of past Coolidge award recipients," said Fraass. Attacking or abusing game creators online doesn?t make games better, BioShock creator Ken Levine has warned; in fact, it can be detrimental.
Speaking to Eurogamer, Levine addressed the recent torrent of abuse levelled at Treyarch design director David Vonderhaar over a Black Ops 2 patch, and the ongoing dramas which caused Polytron?s Phil Fish to leave the industry.
Levine said that he personally isn?t upset by online abuse, and has a pretty good life ? but he worries about what knock-on effects gamer rage could have.
?It can end up being counterproductive for the gamers? own interests,? he said.
?Like, for instance, Vonderhaar. Especially to start bringing your family into it. I?ve had people say threatening things to me. You know, it?s like, why would he want to get up the next morning and go try??
Levine said he doesn?t know Fish and can?t speak for how much through went into the Fez creator?s decision to quit games development.
?But there are guys who I respect and like who walked away from the space because it?s just not worth the trouble any more,? he said.
?Especially if you?ve got families and got lives. Everybody?s entitled to do what they want to do, but just like the developer at some point is entitled to say, you know what? It just isn?t worth it for me any more.?
Levine said that while he personally stands strong against it, some developers are likely to make poor artistic decisions because they feel pressured by fan expectation.
?Say if it was someone besides me, the amount of pressure to get DLC out, I could say, fuck it, let?s cut half of it so we can get it out sooner. I?m used to the pressure, but there may be a guy who?s not like me, who doesn?t have the experience, who will give into that pressure and release something that?s not as good because they feel that,? he said.
?And that?s what I worry more about is how it affects games. As a gamer, game comes out, I hope it?s good, and if I like it I play it and if I don?t like it I don?t play it, and I think you can get in a strange space where it ends up being counterproductive for the gamers. But for me, it?s just part of the job at this part, but I don?t think it helps gaming.?

Timber Creek announced new leaders Tuesday afternoon for two of its most successful programs.
The Wolves named Tim Beaman as their head baseball coach and hired Jody Huggins to direct the softball program.
Huggins replaces Steve Soubasis, who resigned earlier this summer after his wife became pregnant with the family?s second child. Soubasis compiled a 235-103 record in 12 years at Timber Creek and led the Wolves to the state semifinals last season.
?I?m excited about being a part of a program that?s been rich in the softball world,? Huggins said. ?I coached against them when I was at Lake Howell and they?ve got a long list of players that have been dynamite.?
Huggins spent four years as Lake Howell?s head coach and led the Silver Hawks to their first two district titles in program history. He coached at Umatilla the last three years.
Huggins, who has significant football coaching experience and planned to be East River?s offensive coordinator this fall, said he jumped at the opportunity to take the Timber Creek program.
?I had to step down from there to take this job,? Huggins said. ?This was a job I couldn?t pass up when it became available because of the richness of the program. I truly love the softball game.?
Beaman, who played at Colonial and LSU, was the head JV coach and assistant for Scott Grove last season. Grove accepted the First Academy coaching position three weeks ago.
?I look forward to the opportunity. It?s a great program that Grove and his staff have built,? Beaman said.
Beaman has never been a Varsity head coach, but brings 11 years of experience as a travel ball coach on the east side of Orlando.
?I know almost all the kids coming into the program for the next five to six years,? he said.

HIALEAH, Fla. (AP) ? A gunman holding hostages inside a South Florida apartment complex killed six people before being shot to death by a SWAT team that stormed the building early Saturday following an hours-long standoff, police said.
Sgt. Eddie Rodriguez told The Associated Press that police got a call around 6:30 p.m. Friday that shots had been fired in a building with dozens of apartments in Hialeah, a few miles north of Miami.
Rodriguez said that when police arrived, they discovered an active shooter situation: "He's inside the building, moving from floor to floor. Eventually he barricades himself in an apartment."
A crisis team was able to briefly establish communication with the man. Rodriguez said negotiators and a SWAT team tried talking with him from the other side of the door of an apartment unit where he was holding two hostages.
But Rodriguez said the talks eventually "just fell apart." Officers stormed the building, fatally shooting the gunman in an exchange of gunfire.
"They made the decision to go in there and save and rescue the hostages," Rodriguez said. Both hostages survived. Rodriguez said he didn't have any information on how long negotiations lasted.
He said police discovered two people, a male and female, shot to death in the hallway in front of one unit. Three more, a male and two females, were found shot and killed in another apartment on a different floor. Another man who was walking his children into an apartment across the street also was killed. Rodriguez said it wasn't immediately clear whether the gunman took aim at him from an upper-level balcony or if he was hit by a stray bullet.
Zulima Niebles said police told her that three of her family members were among the victims. She said her sister Merly Sophia Niebles, her sister's husband, and her sister's daughter Priscila Perez, 16, were all shot and killed.
Zulima Niebles' husband, Agustin Hernandez, was moving the family's things out of the apartment building and into his car Saturday. Among them were several photos, one showing the teen girl smiling in a red graduation gown, another of his sister-in-law in a white dress, wearing pearls.
Marcela Chavarri, director of the American Christian School, said Priscila Perez, 16, was about to enter her senior year at the school.
"She was a lovely girl," Chavarri said through tears. "She was always happy and helping her classmates."
Officials were not identifying the gunman or victims. Rodriguez said police were still investigating.
Neighbor Fabian Valdes, who lives across the street from the site of the standoff, said he heard shots fired and then looked out his window and saw a man lying on the floor, outside the front lobby. He was on his back and had his arms and legs outstretched.
Valdes said he was in shock. "It's something you never expect," he said.
In Hialeah ? a suburb of about 230,000 residents, about three-quarters of whom are Cuban or Cuban-American ? the entrance to the quiet neighborhood lined with apartment buildings was blocked off early Saturday.
The standoff occurred in an aging beige five-story building with an open terrace in the middle. The apartment where neighbors said the shooting started was charred, the door and ceiling immediately outside burned black.
Miriam Valdes, 70, said she lives on the top floor ? one floor above where the shooting began. She said she heard gunfire and later saw smoke entering her apartment.
She described running in fear to the unit across the hall, where she stayed holed up as officers negotiated with the gunman.
From the apartment, Valdes said she could hear about eight officers talking with the gunman.
She said she heard the officers tell him to "let these people out."
"We're going to help you," she said they told him.
She said the gunman first asked for his girlfriend and then his mother but refused to cooperate.
Ester Lazcano said she lives two doors down from where the shooting began and was in the shower when she heard the first shots. Then there were many more.
"I felt the shots," she said.
Neighbors said the gunman lived in the building with his mother, but police wouldn't confirm that information.
Rodriguez said police were still investigating identities of victims and the gunman, as well as a possible motive.
"Investigators are talking with families of the victims, neighbors, people that were present when all this began," he said. "That way we can start to piece together this huge puzzle that we're working with."

RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) ? Pope Francis presided over one of the most solemn rites of the Catholic Church on Friday, a procession re-enacting Christ's crucifixion that received a Broadway-like treatment befitting its improbable location, Rio's hedonistic Copacabana beach.
Copacabana, which hosts Carnival and Rolling Stones concerts when bikini-clad beauties aren't sunbathing on its white sands, lived up to its reputation by staging a wildly theatrical, and very Latin telling of the Way of the Cross, complete with huge stage sets, complex lighting, a full orchestra and a cast of hundreds acting out a modern version of the biblical story.
The procession is one of the mainstay events of World Youth Day, designed to remind young Catholics about the root of their faith that Christ died to forgive their sins.
Francis tried to drive that home in remarks to the crowd, huddled in jackets on a chilly but finally rain-free night, telling them Jesus bears all the suffering of the world: of the families whose children fall prey to the "false paradise" of drugs, of the hungry "in a world where tons of food are thrown out each day," of those who are persecuted for their religion, their beliefs "or simply for the color of their skin."
"Jesus is united with so many young people who have lost faith in political institutions, because they see in them only selfishness and corruption," Francis said in another reference to the violent protests that broke out in Brazil last month against rampant corruption and inefficiencies in the government.
At the start, Francis greeted some special guests who had a place of honor on the stage: 35 "cartoneros" ? trash recyclers from Argentina whom he invited to participate in the Rio festival, continuing a relationship he started as archbishop of Buenos Aires. There, the former Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio would celebrate Masses for the cartoneros, prostitutes and others on the margins of society.
After the pope left Copacabana, a group of about 200 anti-government protesters arrived near the stage, the latest in hundreds of such demonstrations to hit Brazil since June. Police pushed back some of the protesters as they tried to gain access to the stage. The pope himself, who has long lashed out against political corruption, has lent encouragement to peaceful protests. The protesters began leaving the beach about an hour after arriving.
Francis started his day Friday with another World Youth Day standby, hearing the confessions of five young pilgrims in a Rio park.
"It was just five minutes, it followed the regular ritual of confession, but then Francis stayed and talked with us," said one of the five, Estefani Lescano, 21, a student from La Guaira, Venezuela. "It was all very personal. He told us that young people have the responsibility of keeping the church alive and spreading the word of Christ."
Later, Francis met privately with a few juvenile detainees, a priority ever since his days as archbishop of Buenos Aires and an expression of his belief that the church must reach out to the most marginalized and forgotten of society.
Even now as pope, he calls a group of youths in a Buenos Aires detention center every two weeks just to keep in touch, and one of his most memorable gestures as pope has been his Holy Thursday Mass at a juvenile detention center in Rome where he washed the feet of young offenders.
On Friday, other young offenders presented Francis with a large homemade rosary made out of Styrofoam balls, each one bearing the names of the eight street children gunned down by police death squads in 1993 as they slept outside Rio's Candelaria church ? a notorious massacre that underscored the unequal treatment that outcasts often receive in Brazil. On the cross were the words "Candelaria Never Again" in Portuguese.
In a sign that they too were part of the World Youth Day events, each of the youngsters wore one of the official festival T-shirts.
Francis also had lunch with a dozen World Youth Day volunteers from around the globe, bringing them to tears when he asked them a simple rhetorical question on which to reflect: Why were they here having lunch with the pope while others were hungry in the slums?
The sun finally came out on Friday, ending four days of rain that soaked pilgrims and forced the relocation of the festival's culminating Mass on Sunday. Instead, the Mass and the Saturday night vigil that precedes it will take place at Copacabana beach rather than the mud pit covering the original site in Guaratiba, some 50 kilometers (30 miles) west of central Rio.
The improved weather also provided a brighter backdrop for his words to young and old during his noon prayer, in which he praised the elderly for passing on wisdom and religious heritage.
Francis has made a point of not just focusing on the next generation of Catholics during World Youth Day, but on the older generation as well. It's part of his longstanding work caring for the elderly in Argentina, the crucial role his own grandmother played in his spiritual development and the gentle deference he shows his predecessor, Benedict XVI.
Speaking from the balcony of the residence of Rio's archbishop, Francis noted that Friday is celebrated as Grandparent's Day in much of the world and that young people should take the occasion to honor and thank their grandparents for the wisdom they share.
"How important grandparents are for family life, for passing on the human and religious heritage which is so essential for each and every society!" he said.
Francis spoke about the important "bridge" between young and old in his brief remarks to journalists en route to Rio earlier in the week, saying young Catholics have the strength to move the church forward while older Catholics have the "wisdom of life" to share that shouldn't be discarded.
"This relationship and this dialogue between generations is treasure to be preserved and strengthened," he said Friday.

MONTICELLO ? Mayor Gordon Jenkins said he is giving serious consideration to appointing his girlfriend Rochelle Massey to fill a vacant board seat.
While Jenkins said Friday he has not absolutely made up his mind, he said he could possibly appoint Massey to the $6,588 annual post during the board meeting on Monday.
She would fill a seat automatically left vacant by T.C. Hutchins, until a special election in March. Hutchins was convicted on July 11 in a felony corruption case of attempting to get his friend a job on the police force.
?I have been looking at people but they can't take the heat,? Jenkins said. ?They get criticized and they have jobs and they don't want to do it. The thing about Rochelle and myself is ? we don't need any favors, money or jobs. We can be fair?for all.?
After Hutchins' seat was vacated, Jenkins said he preferred to wait until a special election. He said that the two board members assigned as auditors ? Larissa Bennett and Carmen Rue ? need to sign off on checks before they can be released. Jenkins, who is serving as the acting village manager, said the consulting attorney Dennis Lynch is owed money for litigation. Jenkins said he needs three board votes to override Rue and Bennett so bills can be paid.
?Larissa and Carmen are refusing to sign checks because they don't like certain people,? Jenkins said. ?How do you move forward when they don't sign checks??
Rue has posted a statement on her web page, accusing Jenkins of incompetence. She appeals for any local attorney to represent her in attempting a court action to have Jenkins forcibly removed for ?misconduct, maladministration, malfeasance and malversation in office.? Bennett has declined to talk about the turmoil in the village.
Massey has been Jenkins' domestic partner for many years and works behind the counter at his store, G. Man Beauty Supplies on Broadway. She was also Jenkins' co-defendant in early 2010 when both were arrested at the store and charged with felony trademark counterfeiting after a state police investigation of counterfeit goods. They ultimately pleaded guilty to misdemeanors, admitting to selling knock-off Nike brand shoes and other items and were fined.
Jenkins said he consulted with the New York Conference of Mayors and was told he could legally appoint Massey. He said he ?didn't give a crap? if his political opponents accuse him of nepotism.
?It is perfectly legal,? he said. ?Those are the laws that I follow.?
