Energy Drinks Blamed For Boost In Emergency Room Visits : Bay ...
Post by Nancy Shute, The Salt at NPR Food
Should emergency rooms track the number of people who get hurt or sick after drinking coffee? That?s what the maker of Monster energy drinks suggests in response to a recent report that emergency-room visits involving caffeine-laced energy drinks doubled from 2007 to 2011.
The energy drink maker took issue with the report, pointing out that there was no evidence in the federal government?s survey that energy drinks caused the people?s health problem ? and that energy drinks aren?t the only way to slug caffeine.
?The report did not even look at ER visits associated with coffee consumption and could not say whether people who had consumed significant quantities of caffeine from coffee or other sources so not likewise visit the ER,? Monster Beverage Corp. said in a statement. As we?ve reported recently, young people are drinking more coffee for the extra jolt these days.
True, most people don?t confess to having downed a latte when they show up sick at the ER. But public health officials and lawmakers say energy drinks pose unique hazards because they?re often sold in large sizes that deliver a potent dose of caffeine. They?re flavored and colored to look like soft drinks, making them more appealing to children and teenagers than a cup of coffee. That gives the impression that there?s no downside to drinking a lot, even though consuming large amounts of caffeine can cause problems like rapid heartbeat, muscle tremors, and seizures.
Last fall, the Food and Drug Administration confirmed that it has received five reports of people dying after drinking caffeinated energy drinks, including a 14 year-old Maryland girl. The agency says there?s no proof that the drinks caused the deaths, but it?s now investigating energy-drink safety. And the Federal Trade Commission is looking into the manufacturers? marketing, which, among other things, claims the drinks improve energy and concentration.
The new numbers on emergency-department visits come from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, which tracks drug-related ER visits. They found that energy-drink related visits rose from 10,068 in 2007 to 20,782 in 2011. That?s out of more than 1 million drug-related ER visits, the agency says. Before 2007, energy drink incidents were too few to report, the paper says.
About 60 percent of the people were seeking help with adverse reactions to the energy drink alone, while 27 percent had also taken prescription drugs. Another 13 percent had downed energy drinks and alcohol, while 10 percent had combined energy drinks and illegal drugs. Teenagers and young adults were most likely to end up in the ER.
The facepalm stat: Nine percent of the unfortunates had combined energy drinks with prescription stimulants like Ritalin, giving them a double dose of chemical buzz.
The SAMHSA study doesn?t prove that the drinks caused the health problems, but tracks with other studies that have found health problems with energy drinks. People who combine energy drinks with alcohol are more likely to get drunk, and drive drunk, according to a 2010 study.
The SAMHSA report prompted three congressmen to renew their call for companies to fully disclose energy-drink ingredients, and provide evidence to support marketing claims.
?There is very clearly a lack of understanding about the health effects of energy drinks and their ingredients especially on children and adolescents,? Sen. Richard Blumenthal, D-Conn., said in a statement.
And last Thursday, Chicago Alderman Edward Burke proposed a citywide ban on sales of energy drinks. ?Chicago ought to be on the forefront of public awareness and education about the potential dangers of these products,? he told a local TV station. No word on whether the rest of the city council backs the notion of a buzz-free Windy City.

Dinner Party Wedding at Marvimon
Holy cow, do I ever love this wedding. As soon as I heard bride Raechel pulled her inspiration from Old Hollywood, glitter, and using local resources, I was hooked! Sarah of Arrow & Apple photographed every bit of Raechel and Jack?s dream wedding day at Marvimon House, one of our perennial favorite wedding venues.
From the bride, Raechel: Our wedding vision was greens, naturals, Old Hollywood and glitter. All though the combination might seem a bit odd together the outcome was amazing. It was also really important that we tried to use local sources as much as possible. We didn?t use any big companies to do anything and felt so proud that we could help keep our money going to local and small businesses (besides our photographer who is in a neighboring state!) We had a lot of DIY projects, partially to save money but also because that?s just who we are. We got some plywood, traced out names in a giant fun font, then cut it out with a jigsaw and glittered it with spray adhesive. It made for a great background in pictures and was an awesome accent on the brick walls of the venue.
We liked the natural feel and look of burlap so we made placemats of burlap for everyone that we thought would look great against the gold chargers and the greenery in the middle. Placemats are something we haven?t really seen at weddings and we wanted to balance the formality of a wedding with an intimate, and casual feel. For the ceremony we wanted something really traditional so we had an actual tying of the knot ceremony which made for great photos and was something some people haven?t seen before (or in a very long time anyway). We hung the knot over the entrance of our doorway as a reminder daily of our wedding and the vows we made to each other! We also wanted something similar to a unity candle but less religious so we did a wishbone breaking ceremony! Everyone was given a plastic wishbones and asked to then break them with their neighbor and make a wish for our new marriage!
Any advice for brides planning their weddings now? My biggest piece of advice is to have a little extra money even if you?re strict with a budget. We reviewed our budget on a weekly basis and in the end things crept in that I completely forgot about ? i.e. wine for our rehearsal dinner! Luckily, we had money coming back to us in the end from security deposits. My second biggest piece of advice which would easily rival with the first is to really write down what you want your wedding to be. Our wedding to us needed to involved only the people we could envision in our future. We absolutely adored our vendors and in the end everyone we worked with was very passionate about making our wedding what we wanted. My brother (bride) was our officiant. It made the ceremony that much more personal for us.
My third piece of advice is to try to sleep. I only got a few hours of sleep the last week before the wedding each night and the moment we checked out on Monday morning from the hotel I was sick as a dog which included being sick on our three week trip to Europe. My fourth and last piece of advice, do not let anyone tell you what your wedding should be. We made our wedding exactly what we envisioned. In the end, everyone told us how personal and unique our wedding was because we stayed true to our own wedding vision.

The Picker: What's on our college football teams' wish lists
Click here to read The Picker's Blog
Left to the devices of cheerleaders and the empty-headed, the masses will go into next year expecting OU to be elite instead of incomplete.
Here is the inside business on what each of our football teams needs to find before the fall.
Oklahoma
It needs less cheerleading from the media.College football is a quarterback's game.
OU has no quarterback.
The Sooners could also stand a runner.
OU's backfield looks about like what you'd find at Iowa, tailbacks who can dominate dogs but don't have the moves to get open on their own.
No thanks to Mike "Time Out Time Out" Stoops (a leading candidate for nickname of the year), OU also needs a defense.
Were these returning starters coming back to Michigan State, they'd be worried sick.
If the media quits cowering in front of the Stoops Gang and gets real, perhaps the football team will respond as well.
Oklahoma State
This team has progressed nicely from the overnight sensation spike in the polls and doesn't need a whole lot except on the psychological level. It is, after all, the best team in the state going into the 2013 season.
The only slightly abnormal pressure comes from moneyed man Pickens, who wants to see his team play for a national title before he turns 100.
OSU needs a better defense, but in this conference, who doesn't - what skillful defensive lineman in his right mind wants to chase around bubble screens for three years?
The main thing OSU needs to do is act like it belongs up there in the college ranks and quit whining about having to play decent nonconference foes. That starts at the top. Gundy has been a Cowboy so long, sometimes he acts like they could still stink at any second.
Tulsa
As is the case with OSU, it's going to be hard for this team to get much better.Great coaching, great character, great records, about all that's slipping through the cracks are fans.
And, as is the case with all schools on the tiny enrollment side, the only way to fill the seats is by winning them all, or by recruiting some freak of nature that the big places missed.
Sleeper stars are hard to find.
Hire more assistants.
Maybe get lucky with a coach's kid.
PICKS
Sunday
San Francisco (-4 1/2) at Atlanta: Start of Harbaugh Brothers Day in the NFL - the lippy one coaches SF, the slightly quieter one runs Baltimore. This one goes on Fox, praise be, as the announcers pause occasionally for breath.
The bandwagon for the SF quarterback includes everybody who loved: Vick, then RG3, then Wilson at Seattle.
Then there was one runner left, the man from Nevada.
True, Atlanta is stodgy.
But this isn't Nevada.
Big upset, Atlanta by 4.
Baltimore at New England (-8 1/2): This, and the Super Bowl itself, go on CBS, headed by the worst announcing team ever, Saturday Nigh Live parodies included, Nantz and Simms.
Nantz would probably live in a tree by the 18th green at Augusta if they'd let him. Masters promos three months early will ring in our ears.
And Simms keeps explaining simple plays like they came from a foreign land.
New England has a unique pass attack - a very low actual air miles figure.
The average New England pass travels four yards by air, then a receiver carries it 25 more.
The Harbaugh brothers watch the Super Bowl from the family box.
NE by 7.

Apple cuts orders for iPhone 5 parts on weak demand: Nikkei
Mon Jan 14, 2013 2:35pm EST
(Reuters) - Shares in Apple Inc dipped below $500 for the first time in almost one year after reports it is slashing orders for screens and other components as intensifying competition erodes demand for its latest iPhone.
Japan's Nikkei reported on Monday that the world's largest technology corporation began sharply reducing buying of liquid crystal displays about a month ago from suppliers like Japan Display Inc and Sharp Corp.
The report, later matched by the Wall Street Journal, comes as hard-charging rivals like Samsung Electronics, which makes phones based on Google Inc's popular Android software, continue to expand market share globally.
Apple stock slid more than 4 percent to an intraday low of $498.51 -- a level not seen since February 16, 2012 -- before bouncing back to trade just above $500 at midday. The news also hurt shares of suppliers such as Cirrus Logic Inc, which dived 9 percent.
Some analysts argued that Apple and its manufacturing partners had struggled with quality issues that might have curtailed production times.
"Our checks with supply chain contacts close to the situation identified a very different cause: a slower ramp in the manufacturing of iPhones and iPads (reflecting some quality control issues) and insufficient production lines," said Joane Feeney of Longbow Research.
"Rather than ordering more components and having inventory build up further, Apple put component suppliers on notice to hold off, for the time being, on further shipments until it expanded its production lines - which it plans to complete by the end of the quarter."
By some estimates, the holiday quarter may have been the worst for U.S. retailers since the 2008 financial crisis, with sales growth far below expectations. Other data yields a more mixed picture of holiday season demand.
Apple was not immediately available for comment. No one at Sharp was immediately available to comment on Monday - a national holiday in Japan - and parts suppliers to Apple in Taiwan declined to comment.
CUTBACKS
Apple has asked Japan Display, Sharp and LG Display Co Ltd to roughly halve supplies of LCD panels from an initial plan for about 65 million screens in January-March, the Nikkei cited people familiar with the situation as saying.
Japan Display's plant in southwest Japan, where Apple has invested heavily, is expected to temporarily reduce output by up to 80 percent from October-December levels, the Nikkei reported, while Sharp's dedicated facility for iPhone 5 LCDs will trim production in January-February by about 40 percent.
The move, if confirmed, would tally with analysts saying that sales of the new iPhone 5, which was released in September, have not been as strong as anticipated.
Apple has lost ground gradually to South Korean rival Samsung, as well as smaller, fast-growing rivals such as China's Huawei Technologies Co Ltd and ZTE Corp.
Samsung overtook Apple in 2012 to become the world's biggest seller of smartphones, helped in part by the popularity of its Galaxy Note II phone-cum-tablet and a vastly wider range of low- to high-end devices that appeal to a broad swath of consumers. Apple rolled out a single new smartphone last year.
Jefferies analyst Peter Misek trimmed his iPhone shipment estimates for the January-March quarter on December 14, saying that the technology company had started cutting orders to suppliers to balance excess inventory.
Apple also cut its orders for memory chips for its new iPhone from its main supplier and competitor Samsung, Reuters reported in September, quoting sources with direct knowledge of the matter.
The company has been cutting back its orders from Samsung as it seeks to diversify its memory chip supply lines.
Samsung said on Monday that global sales of its flagship Galaxy S smartphones had topped 100 million since the first model was launched in May 2010. The Galaxy S3, launched last May, sold more than 40 million in seven months.
The Galaxy S IV is expected within months and may sport an unbreakable screen, full high-definition quality resolution of 440 pixels per inch, and a more powerful processor.
It's expected to increase its smartphone sales by more than a third this year and widen its lead over Apple, according to researcher Strategy Analytics. It forecast Samsung will sell 290 million smartphones in 2013 versus iPhone sales of 180 million.
Kim Sung-in, an analyst at Kiwoom Securities in Seoul, sees Samsung shipping 320 million smartphones this year and doubling sales of its tablets to 32 million.

amyhoarwash: Tips on Couples Anger Management
Getting tips on couples anger management was something that we really needed now that we?d become parents. I wanted to change our relationship for the better, and finally convinced my husband that we should work on things. A counselor that we?d been talking with referred me to this book. It was a great breakthrough for us because we both took the time to read it. It was nice because we were finally able to be involved with something together, and it really offered some great insights.

Your family and finances are at risk if you become incapacitated.
Nearly 1 in 2 Seniors Become Incapacitated Before they die. Your family and Finances are at risk if you become incapacitated. I get calls every day about someone?s mom or dad who is no longer able to pay their bills, manage their finances or who is being taken advantage of by an evildoer. The caller often knows that mom or dad has a Will or maybe a Trust. Most people don?t realize that a will and often a Trust works just like a compass? only this compass is pointing your family toward the local county courthouse because a Will only affects what happens if you die. A Trust can cover what happens if you don?t die but many Trusts are written to avoid Probate, and do not have adequate provisions for what happens if you don?t die.
So? what if you don?t die? What if you?re just happily walking through life and, one day, you have an accident, a stroke, or some other disabling injury or disease that leaves you alive but mentally incapacitated? You?re stuck in limbo, and so is your will! It can do nothing to help you deal with the possibility of being alive but unable to make decisions for yourself, your estate, or your health care.
On the other hand, maybe you?ll never face a catastrophic event that changes your life in an instant like a stroke can. But what if Alzheimer?s, or Parkinson?s, or dementia, or some other other disabling disease robs you or your spouse of the ability to make decisions?
If this happens, you and your family will now face the very real possibility of hiring an attorney and going to court to establish a guardianship or conservatorship. In this legal proceeding, someone is appointed the decision-maker over your life, your health, and your wealth.
Hopefully, the court will choose the right person for you. You could live the rest of your life under what I refer to as ?living probate? (also known as a Conservatorship) You?ll be a ward of the court if you haven?t taken the proper legal precautions. All of your financial decision-making and health care will be subject to the review and control of a judge. Your family (and the attorney) will need to return to court from time to time to provide a financial accounting of every check that is written For this reason, I often sarcastically say that a traditional estate plan could make you wish you were dead. In just a couple generations, there have been enormous changes in life expectancy, and there is a high probability that you or someone in your family will face long-term care or nursing home expenses. For this reason, I believe you can never really be sure if you?re safe unless you have an iron-clad estate and longevity plan.
As your Los Angeles and Orange County Elder Law Attorney I provide iron-clad plans for what happens if you don?t die. If you have a loved one with Alzheimer?s or another dementia please sign up for my FREE RESOURCE: the Indispensable Alzheimer?s Resource Kit www.alzheimersanswersnow.com

Internet activist, programmer Aaron Swartz dead at 26
(Reuters) - Internet activist and computer prodigy Aaron Swartz, who helped create an early version of the Web feed system RSS and was facing federal criminal charges in a controversial fraud case, has committed suicide at age 26, authorities said on Saturday.
Police found Swartz's body in his apartment in the New York City borough of Brooklyn on Friday, according to a spokeswoman for the city's chief medical examiner, which ruled the death a suicide by hanging.
Swartz is widely credited with being a co-author of the specifications for the Web feed format RSS 1.0, which he worked on at age 14, according to a blog post on Saturday from his friend, science fiction author Cory Doctorow.
RSS, which stands for Rich Site Summary, is a format for delivering to users content from sites that change constantly, such as news pages and blogs.
Over the years, he became an online icon for helping to make a virtual mountain of information freely available to the public, including an estimated 19 million pages of federal court documents from the PACER case-law system.
"Information is power. But like all power, there are those who want to keep it for themselves," Swartz wrote in an online "manifesto" dated 2008.
"The world's entire scientific and cultural heritage, published over centuries in books and journals, is increasingly being digitized and locked up by a handful of private corporations. ... sharing isn't immoral ? it's a moral imperative. Only those blinded by greed would refuse to let a friend make a copy," he wrote.
That belief - that information should be shared and available for the good of society - prompted Swartz to found the nonprofit group DemandProgress.
The group led a successful campaign to block a bill introduced in 2011 in the U.S. House of Representatives called the Stop Online Piracy Act.
The bill, which was withdrawn amid public pressure, would have allowed court orders to curb access to certain websites deemed to be engaging in illegal sharing of intellectual property.
Swartz and other activists objected on the grounds it would give the government too many broad powers to censor and squelch legitimate Web communication.
But Swartz faced trouble in July 2011, when he was indicted by a federal grand jury of wire fraud, computer fraud and other charges related to allegedly stealing millions of academic articles and journals from a digital archive at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
According to the federal indictment, Swartz - who was a fellow at Harvard University's Edmond J. Safra Center for Ethics - used MIT's computer networks to steal more than 4 million articles from JSTOR, an online archive and journal distribution service.
JSTOR did not press charges against Swartz after the digitized copies of the articles were returned, according to media reports at the time.
Swartz, who pleaded not guilty to all counts, faced 35 years in prison and a $1 million fine if convicted. He was released on bond. His trial was scheduled to start later this year.
'HARSH ARRAY OF CHARGES'
In a statement released Saturday, the family and partner of Swartz praised his "brilliance" and "profound" commitment to social justice, and struck out at what they said were decisions made at MIT and by prosecutors that contributed to his death.
"Aaron's death is not simply a personal tragedy. It is the product of a criminal justice system rife with intimidation and prosecutorial overreach," the statement said.
"The U.S. Attorney's office pursued an exceptionally harsh array of charges, carrying potentially over 30 years in prison, to punish an alleged crime that had no victims," it added.
A spokeswoman for the U.S. Attorney's office said they wanted to respect the family's privacy and did "not feel it is appropriate to comment on the case at this time." MIT could not be reached for comment
Swartz's funeral is scheduled for Tuesday in Highland Park, Illinois. On Saturday, online tributes to Swartz flooded across cyberspace.
"Aaron had an unbeatable combination of political insight, technical skill and intelligence about people and issues," Doctorow, co-editor of the weblog Boing Boing, wrote on the site.
Doctorow wrote that Swartz had "problems with depression for many years."
Swartz also played a role in building the news-sharing website Reddit, but left the company after it was acquired by Wired magazine owner Conde Nast. Recalling that time of his life, Swartz described his struggles with dark feelings.
In an online account of his life and work, Swartz said he became "miserable" after going to work at the San Francisco offices of Wired after Reddit was acquired.
"I took a long Christmas vacation," he wrote. "I got sick. I thought of suicide. I ran from the police. And when I got back on Monday morning, I was asked to resign."
Tim Berners-Lee, who is credited as the most important figure in the creation of the World Wide Web, commemorated Swartz in a Twitter post on Saturday.
"Aaron dead," he wrote. "World wanderers, we have lost a wise elder. Hackers for right, we are one down. Parents all, we have lost a child. Let us weep."

Bank of America bullies small business owner because he sells ...
This gun owner?s business began to boom as Internet sales spiked and all of a sudden Bank of America put a hold on the money coming in. At first it seemed that their intentions were appropriate, to simply ensure that everything coming in was legitimate. They said they would hold his money for 48 hours while they investigated it. But after 48 hours they refused to release it and he said they told him that it was because he was selling guns on the Internet, and apparently they didn?t approve. It was at least 3 weeks before he?d see the bulk of that money, something he says is outlandish.
Here?s the interview:
The beautiful thing about the private sector is that you can drop one bank and choose another. I?m not suggesting that would be easy or even appropriate at this point for him to do. But if he gets fed up enough with this kind of intimidation, there are other large banks that would hopefully welcome his business.

Chris Christie: Did primal scream help or hurt his presidential prospects?
Gov. Chris Christie tore into Speaker Boehner and the House GOP over the delay in a vote on Sandy relief. That could help him get reelected but hurt him in a Republican primary campaign.
By Peter Grier,?Staff Writer / January 3, 2013
EnlargeDid New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie help or hurt himself on Wednesday by blasting his own political party? In case you haven?t heard, after House Speaker John Boehner delayed a vote on a $60 billion superstorm Sandy recovery bill, Governor Christie lit up Mr. Boehner and Republican House members like they were sparklers.

The Sandy legislation ?could not overcome the toxic internal politics of the House majority,? Christie said at a brutal Trenton news conference.
Adding that ?palace intrigue? had helped scuttle a bill important to New Jersey, New York, and other areas hard hit by the Oct. 29 storm, Christie heaped disdain on you-know-who for something he (Christie) considered a debacle.
?There?s only one group to blame for the continued suffering of these innocent victims, the House majority and their speaker, John Boehner,? said Christie.
?It?s why the American people hate Congress,? he added, getting in another kick on the way out the door.
Christie?s bravura performance of a governor scorned is probably a big help for him in his current job, of course. For one thing, it worked, or at least appeared to. Under the pressure of negative comments from Christie, New York Rep. Peter King, and other northeastern Republicans, Boehner scheduled an initial vote Friday on a $9 billion Sandy flood insurance package, and promised that a vote on a further $51 billion in aid will take place on the first full legislative day of the next Congress, Jan. 15.
Christie is running for reelection, and his constituents are unlikely to be offended by his blunt, successful tirade. It could enter New Jersey lore, maybe as the subject of a Bruce Springsteen song. (Hey, Springsteen fan Christie can dream, can?t he? The Boss wrote a rocker about the prosaic subject of tearing down Giants Stadium in New Jersey?s Meadowlands, after all.)
But if Christie wants to run for president someday his primal scream may not help.
Yes, many voters will agree with him and admire a politician who?s willing to cross his own party to get things done. In a general election Christie would probably benefit from a press conference that looks like leadership ? if you?re not John Boehner or a House GOP member.

Top 5 Non-Profit YouTube Videos of 2012
The fiscal austerity crisis has been temporarily averted, but given the apparent animosity between the current leaders of Congress its a miracle that any deal was made at all. Politico has a rather lengthy breakdown of the last week or so of negotiations that led to last night's budget bill and it leads off with an?anecdote?illustrating the current state of American politics. As they arrived for a much-hyped meeting with the President last Friday afternoon, Speaker of the House John Boehner spotted House Majority Leader Harry?Reid approaching just steps from the Oval Office. ...
